Ottawa Historical Association – 200 Years of Treaty Annuities

The year 2018 marks 200 years of treaty annuities – that is, annual payments made by the Crown to Indigenous people as members of treaties. This talk will explore the historical meanings of treaty annuities – as payments for land, promises of aid, and occasions for regular meetings and diplomacy.It will also address how the application of treaty annuities has evolved and continued from 1818 to 2018.
