The canal footbridge currently being constructed over the Rideau Canal is to be named after Flora MacDonald, Canada's first female foreign minister. Considered a trailblazer for women in politics, MacDonald was a Progressive Conservative MP for 16 years, and held a number of cabinet positions. She followed her political career with years of humanitarian work. Council voted and approved the name at its July 11 meeting.
