Hosted by Dr. Anton Minkov, PhD in Islamic History (McGill University), Department of National Defence.

The reasons for the 1979 Soviet intervention in Afghanistan have been debated for a long time. The Iranian revolution, NATO missiles deployment in Europe, and fears of the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan at the time have been considered as some of the factors behind the Soviet Politburo’s decision making. Using original documents from the National Security Archive, Dr. Minkov reconstructs the Soviet decision-making at the time. His talk will point to another factor that so far has been overlooked by historians – the 1977-78 Ogaden war between Somalia and Ethiopia.

Doors open at 7:30, Speaker begins at 7:45.
